Welcome Home
environmental installation | Schuylkill Center, Philadelphia, PA

In this urban forest, diverse species of native plants that provide habitat for insects and birds are threatened by invasive species and deer browse.  This work was developed in partnership with scientists and land managers, with an aim to reveal the history of the site and the ongoing role of humans in managing the forest. Participants worked with naturalists and plant biologists to clear an area of invasive species and plant native species to encourage biodiversity. A door welcomes visitors to the enclosure while keeping out deer, and a stone doorstep is inscribed with the words “Welcome Home.”  Over time, visitors will be able to observe the difference between the plant life inside the fence and outside the fence.
