POCKET BIOSPHERES FOR ADOPTION
Pocket Biospheres for Adoption
2004-ongoing
participatory public project; plastic capsules, soil, mosses and tiny organisms, adoption forms

Participants adopt a tiny “pocket biosphere” filled with mosses, organic matter and organisms. An adoption administrator discusses the responsibilities entailed in adoption with participants. They then may choose to sign an adoption form and commit to care for the biosphere.  Small guidebooks that contain a manual for care of the biosphere are also included in the adoption process. A record of each adoption is kept on file and displayed in the adoption venue. Pocket Biosphere Adoptions have taken place at diverse venues, from art fairs, to farmers markets, museums, classrooms and festivals.
